Diverticulitis is a digestive condition that occurs when small pouches, called diverticula, become inflamed or infected in the wall of the colon. While many people have diverticula without experiencing symptoms, inflammation can lead to significant abdominal pain and other digestive problems that require medical attention. Recognizing the symptoms early and seeking prompt evaluation can help reduce the risk of complications and support a smoother recovery. A gastroenterologist can diagnose diverticulitis and recommend an individualized treatment plan based on the severity of the condition.

What Causes Diverticulitis?

Diverticula commonly develop as people age, particularly in the lower portion of the large intestine. The presence of these pouches alone is known as diverticulosis and often causes no symptoms.
Diverticulitis occurs when one or more diverticula become inflamed or infected. Although the exact cause is not always clear, several factors, including aging, obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, and a diet low in fiber, may increase the risk of developing the condition.

Common Symptoms of Diverticulitis

Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe illness and often develop suddenly. Common signs include:
  • Persistent pain, usually in the lower left abdomen
  • Fever and chills
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Abdominal tenderness
Because these symptoms can resemble other digestive disorders, an accurate diagnosis is important before beginning treatment.

How Diverticulitis Is Diagnosed and Treated

A gastroenterologist will review your symptoms, perform a physical examination, and may recommend imaging studies, such as a CT scan, to confirm the diagnosis and determine the severity of inflammation.
Treatment depends on the extent of the condition. Mild cases may improve with temporary dietary modifications, oral antibiotics when appropriate, adequate hydration, and rest. More severe infections or complications, such as abscesses, perforation, or bowel obstruction, may require hospitalization, intravenous antibiotics, or surgery.
Following recovery, your healthcare provider may recommend gradually increasing dietary fiber and making other lifestyle changes to support long-term colon health and reduce the risk of future episodes.

When Should You Seek Medical Care?

Persistent abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, or significant changes in bowel habits should not be ignored. Prompt evaluation is especially important if symptoms become severe or are accompanied by difficulty eating, worsening pain, or signs of dehydration.
Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and improve recovery.

Protecting Your Digestive Health

Although not every case of diverticulitis can be prevented, maintaining a healthy lifestyle may help lower your risk. Eating a balanced diet that includes adequate fiber, staying physically active, drinking plenty of water, and following your healthcare provider's recommendations can all support healthy digestive function.
If you experience symptoms that may be related to diverticulitis, schedule an appointment with a gastroenterologist. Early evaluation and personalized treatment can help relieve symptoms, promote healing, and support long-term digestive health.
